I pick up my life
And move north,
Not on a flight from plight
But on a freight train of feelings.
I pick up my life
And realize this is not just another trip.
I take with me additional luggage,
Heavy but full of fortune.
A one-way ticket for two,
I take with me a partner,
A life greater than my own.
I sacrifice life as I know it,
For one that is unknown.
Together we pick up our lives
And join them together.
Together we take each other,
Together we lift our luggage,
Together we move north,
Together we are.
Poem inspired by Langston Hughes's "One Way Ticket"
COUPLING: OUR STORY
HOW IT ALL STARTED...
Kendra and Jonathan connected through a match-making mutual friend, who just so happened to be Kendra's BFF. One day, after class, Jonathan, and Kendra's BFF (along with a few other friends) went out to celebrate a huge final they all passed. While celebrating, Jonathan's ex-girlfriend, who he had recently gotten out of a relationship with, was on a date with another guy.
Though at the time Kendra had never met Jonathan, her best friend was secretly plotting to hook the two up. Plus, after she spied his ex in the restaurant on a date, it was further confirmed that the two had called it quits. So instead of using an arrow, her bestie used a cellphone to play cupid and next gave Kendra a call. When Kendra's best friend called, she said, 'Hey friend, I need you to do me a favor. My friend is out to eat with me and a few others and his ex-girlfriend is on a date with another guy!' Kendra replied, 'Ok - what do you want me to do?' Her bestie then says, 'I need you to come here and make her jealous!'
Considering Kendra and her BFF were always down for a "college shenanigan" - she obliged. After she finished watching the Lakers game, Kendra headed to the restaurant, but by the time she arrived, his ex-girlfriend had left. While mission "Make Your Ex Jealous" had failed, Jonathan and Kendra still ended up exchanging numbers.
Kendra and Jonathan hung out for a bit, but things didn't quite kick off. After a year, they found themselves crossing paths again and decided to take things a bit more serious than they did before. After one day of hanging out, they never missed a day without talking to each other.
THE PROPOSAL...
Jonathan is a Doctoral Student at the University of Missouri. When he has long weekends or breaks, he travels to Atlanta to visit Kendra. During his spring break, Jonathan went to Atlanta and decided to plan an adventurous outing for he and Kendra. Neither one of them had been ziplining, so Jonathan planned for them to go on a ziplining tour at Lake Lanier.
Before planning this adventure, Jonathan checked the weather to make sure it was suitable for their tour. Leading up to the day, the weather showed 70+ degrees and sunny. Well of course, the way mother nature operates, it ends up pouring rain on that morning. The zip-line tour was non-refundable and in the word's of true zippers, "we ZIP in the rain". Needless to say, they ended up on the zip lining tour and got rained on the entire hour. Despite the rain, they still had fun!
So, after the tour, Jonathan had the "bright" idea to take a walk down a trail leading to the water. Kendra told him she didn't want to go because it was still drizzling and they were both wet from their zip tour. He argued and said he really wanted to go because he missed the water (like a true Florida boy!) and wanted to take a walk. She argued back and told him she didn't want to go! So, Jonathan says, 'Well we're going anyways' ... because this was his spring break, she didn't fuss any further and decided to go.
As they walked down the trail, Kendra looked to her right and saw a man hiding behind a bush. She immediately told Jonathan she saw someone and was going back to the car! He says, 'What are you talking about, you're tripping'. As they continued to walk, Kendra sees another man hiding behind a tree - at this point, she was leaving, whether Jonathan came with her or not! Soon after Kendra decided to head back, their dog Kobe ran out with a sign hanging from his neck that says, "Will you marry us?" Kendra chuckled and Jonathan got on his knee and proposed. Of course she said YES!
Jonathan gathered their parents, Kendra's brother and a photographer to share and capture their special moment. Kendra later found out the photographer and her brother were the people behind the bush and tree!
Later that night, Kendra's best friends planned a huge engagement party for them where they invited all of their friends and family! It was definitely an amazing day!
